MAKERS: Women Who Make America Premieres Tonight on PBS! (Video)

Posted on 12:03 PM by Unknown
Narrated by Meryl Streep, this long-awaited documentary of the last 50 years of the women's movement premieres tonight on PBS. The documentary features prominent feminist trailblazers too numerous to name, such as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Oprah, Gloria Steinem, etc.

The first video is from Democracy Now! It features an interview with Betsy West, Executive Producer of "Makers: Women Who Make America."

"Makers: Women Who Make America": New Film Chronicles Past 50 Years of Feminist Movement

The second video is the amazing PBS trailer:

Watch MAKERS: Women Who Make America Trailer on PBS. See more from Makers: Women Who Make America.

Via Democracy NOW!:
Narrated by Meryl Streep, the film explores the women’s movement from the publication of Betty Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique” published 50 years ago this month in 1963 to the Anita Hill v. Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991. “Makers” shares the story of legendary figures such as Gloria Steinem and Oprah Winfrey, to lesser known pioneers such as Kathrine Switzer. In 1967, Switzer became the first woman to officially enter and run the Boston Marathon. Her run made headlines when a top race official tried to forcibly remove her from the race. She finished the race. [Transcript to come. Check back soon.]

The Sexist Oscars by Misogynist Seth MacFarlane Round-Up (Video)

Posted on 1:38 PM by Unknown

I've seen a few Academy Award Ceremonies and last night was the absolute worst thanks to host Seth MacFarlane's nonstop sexist attempts at jokes.

Marching back to the 1950s anyone?

This was truly a night from the 1950s with the Family Guy creator's monologue aimed squarely at 1950s style good old boys.

Why were women even watching?

Where were Amy and Tina?

Some suggest that last night was the End of Men Oscars.  Goddess we hope so.

Watch Seth MacFarlane sing 'We Saw Your Boobs:'

New Yorker: Seth MacFarlane and the Oscars’ Hostile, Ugly, Sexist Night:

Watching the Oscars last night meant sitting through a series of crudely sexist antics led by a scrubby, self-pleased Seth MacFarlane. That would be tedious enough. But the evening’s misogyny involved a specific hostility to women in the workplace, which raises broader questions than whether the Academy can possibly get Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to host next year. It was unattractive, and sour, and started with a number called “We Saw Your Boobs.”

“We Saw Your Boobs” began as a song-and-dance number in which MacFarlane and some grinning guys named actresses in the audience and the movies in which their breasts were visible. That’s about it. What made it worse was that most of the movies mentioned, if not all (“Gia”) were pretty great—“Silkwood,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Monster’s Ball,” “Monster,” “The Accused,” “Iris”—and not exactly teen-exploitation pictures. The women were not showing their bodies to amuse Seth MacFarlane but, rather, to do their jobs. Or did they just think they were? You girls think you’re making art, the Academy, through MacFarlane, seemed to say, but all we—and the “we” was resolutely male—really see is that we got you to undress. The joke’s on you....

Salon: Seth MacFarlane, Misogynistic Oscar Host:

The lady-dissing jokes didn’t stop with the ode to breasts: MacFarlane cracked that Jennifer Aniston was a stripper. He sexualized the young Quvenzhane Wallis: “It’ll be 16 years before she’s too old for Clooney,” which is, somehow, only the second most offensive thing someone said about the adorable nine-year-old last night. He also described Jessica Chastain’s character in “Zero Dark...More remarkable than all undercutting remarks, is that without them, MacFarlane had barely anything to say about women at all: they were either boff-toys or nothing.

Twitchy: Sexist flop: Oscar host Seth MacFarlane’s disdain for women did not go over well:

"I'm continually making fun of women in front of the world because I'm terrified of their magical vaginas."--Seth MacFarlane, 2013.

New York Magtazine: Seth MacFarlane's Sexist Jokes, Transcribed

Salon: Forget Seth MacFarlane's sexist jokes. This was the End of Men Oscars:

I’ll limit my discussion of “We Saw Your Boobs” to noting how, um, nakedly it put into relief a recurring theme in last night’s ceremony: A defensive anxiety about the ascendant power of women (emblematized, later on, by the pairing of the statuesque Theron with the wee Dustin Hoffman as awards presenters.) In spite of MacFarlane’s steady stream of lady-diminishing wisecracks (about Jessica Chastain’s character in Zero Dark Thirty being a typical grudge-holding woman, Quvenzhané Wallis soon being old enough to date George Clooney, etc.) it was a night dominated by a trio of powerful, glittering, seemingly indomitable women ...

Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY): Ashley Judd Is Acting Like a Candidate

Posted on 12:00 PM by Unknown

This Kentucky Democrat thinks she is running:

The beautiful movie star tries to take on Washington by defeating a powerful Republican leader. It's not a plot line, it's reality: The actress Ashley Judd is making moves to take on GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

She hasn't announced yet, but her biggest supporter in Kentucky, Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, told ABC News, "I would be surprised if she doesn't run at this point."

"She is certainly acting like a candidate, a potential candidate.

Yarmuth says Judd is ready and has even done opposition research on herself to see areas McConnell will try to "exploit."

Psycho Ted Cruz (R-NE): Commies At Harvard Law Threaten US Government

Posted on 12:04 PM by Unknown

McCarthy wannabe Ted Cruz (R-NE) says he has a list of commies at Harvard who advocate a violent overthrow of the U.S. Government.

Cruz thinks the commies on his secret list are comrades of "the most radical" President evah!

And he ain't talking about FDR!

Nut job Cruz is referring to centrist Democratic President Obama.

As usual with psychos, the secret list of commies is buried in a secret vault deep inside Cruz's deranged head.

The real threat to the US Government is the epidemic of insane incompetence wrought be deranged Republicans like Cruz.

Cruz greeted the audience jovially, but soon launched an impassioned attack on President Obama, whom he described as “the most radical” President “ever to occupy the Oval Office.” (I was covering the conference and kept the notes.)
He then went on to assert that Obama, who attended Harvard Law School four years ahead of him, “would have made a perfect president of Harvard Law School.” The reason, said Cruz, was that, “There were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than Communists! There was one Republican. But there were twelve who would say they were Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government.”

Chris Hayes Invited to CPAC (Video)

Posted on 11:30 AM by Unknown
Amazingly the psycho Conservative Political Action Conference has invited Chris Hayes to join them on stage this year. Chris explains that he'd love to go, but only if the ultra hard-core conservatives mend their bigoted ways and lift the ban on gays:

Yes, the legendary Conservative Political Action Conference had i nvited yours truly to participate at its 40th annual conference this March..  I would be among 10,000 hard core conservative activists gracing the same stage as everyone from Marco Rubio to Sarah Palin to Mitt Romney, who have used the occasion to flaunt their conservative bona fides...

So I wrote back to Al Cardenas who runs the ACU in a letter yesterday and asked whether the policy is still in effect. If it isn’t, I told him, I’m psyched to go and if it is, well, I’ll wait until it changes, which is, really, just a matter of time.

Poll: A Pathetic 22% of Americans Are Republicans

Posted on 11:03 PM by Unknown
Americans are, at long last, getting smart.

It's been a long time coming.

A USA TODAY/Pew Research Center Poll finds that Americans have little or no use for the Republican Party:
Now just 22% of Americans, nearly a record low, consider themselves Republicans.

The president's overall job approval rating is 51%, a bit higher than it typically has been for the past three years. The approval rating for Republican congressional leaders is a dismal 25%. Democratic congressional leaders stand in-between, at 37%.
And while Obama’s 51% job approval rating is down slightly from a post-election high of 55%, it remains well above the 25% approval rating for GOP congressional leaders. The job rating for Democratic leaders is higher (37%), though more disapprove (55%) than approve of their performance.

Ashley Judd meets with DSCC

Posted on 12:30 AM by Unknown

Yet more proof that Ashley Judd is seriously considering entering the race and making politics a whole lot more interesting, not to mention, at long last, enticing to young people:

Actress Ashley Judd privately met with officials at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in Washington earlier this week, as she continues to weigh whether to mount a Senate run against Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, according to two sources familiar with the session.

The meeting indicates that the Hollywood movie star and eighth-generation Kentuckian is still seriously weighing a political foray after spending the past several years as an outspoken environmental and liberal activist. But sources said it remains uncertain whether Judd wants to leave acting to take on the Senate minority leader, who is the Democrats’ top target in 2014 when he runs for a sixth term.

Hillary Beats 2016 GOP Presidential Contenders in Red State Georgia: Poll

Posted on 5:37 PM by Unknown

If Hillary runs in 2016, there might not be any red states!  Hillary Clinton beats GOP stars Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio in the traditionally red state of Georgia according to Public Policy Polling.

If Hillary runs, the 2016 presidential race will be a wipeout!

Hillary Clinton is such a formidable political force that she'd begin a 2016 presidential race ahead of Republican contenders even in, of all places, deep-red Georgia, according to a new poll.

The survey by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling found Clinton leading Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio 49% to 46% in the Peach State. She also tops Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, last year's GOP vice presidential nominee, 50 percent to 45 percent, according to the poll. Clinton has strong approval ratings for a Democrat in the conservative state, with 49% of voters viewing her favorably and 44% viewing her unfavorably.

"I don't know that anybody would run against Hillary," Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told BuzzFeed this week. "If she runs, she clears the field. … Once we get through the 2014 election, that's when it starts moving. I think she's gonna make a decision at that time about what she'll do."

Rep. John Duncan (R-TN) Claims Violence Against Women Is Bad Because Women Are Weak

Posted on 5:36 PM by Unknown
Ugh. Who elects these prehistoric fools? Naturally the caveboy presumes to speak for 'most men.'

Sign the petition demanding Rep. Duncan apologize and cosponsor VAWA.

Slate:
The latest example is Rep. John Duncan of Tennessee, who dithered to the Chatanooga Times Free Press about whether or not he'd vote for VAWA and then added this:

"Like most men, I'm more opposed to violence against women than even violence against men," Duncan said. "Because most men can handle it a little better than a lot of women can."

As noted by the newspaper, VAWA is actually a gender-neutral law, and its protections extend to all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, male and female. The name simply stems from the fact that women tend to be targeted by these crimes far more often.
But really, it's unsurprising that Rep. Duncan seems not to know or care to learn what's in the bill he claims to be so torn over voting for—that's just par for the course in Republican politics—but that his support for the bill in contingent on the claim that women are inferior, as opposed to less shaky grounds such as "crime is wrong" or "rape and domestic violence tear at our communities."

According to Duncan, "Violence Against Women Act" is just "another bill with a motherhood-and-apple-pie title," and you can't vote based on the title.

Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) Opposes Universal Preschool Because of the Paperwork

Posted on 5:15 PM by Unknown
Marsha Blackburn can always find a reason, no matter how ridiculous, to support the 12th century GOP platform:
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) shot down President Obama’s proposal for universal pre-school education during an appearance on CSPAN’s Washington Journal on Friday, complaining that the plan — first unveiled during last week’s State of the Union address — would force teachers to fill out too much paperwork.

“You know, I had an email from a teacher as [Obama] was giving the speech, someone I’ve known for a long time and it was, ‘Are you kidding me? More paperwork?’” Blackburn said. She went on to argue that education should be handled by state and local governments:

GOP FL Governor Rick Scott Says Yes to Medicaid Expansion In Obamacare

Posted on 5:10 PM by Unknown
Are you paying attention Governor Haslam?
Florida Gov. Rick Scott endorsed the Medicaid expansion in President Obama's healthcare law on Wednesday, delivering a political coup to the White House.
Roughly 1 million Floridians will have access to healthcare coverage if the state legislature approves Scott's plan. He said he would only support the expansion for three years, and would back out if the federal government backs away from its funding commitments.  "While the federal government is committed to paying 100 percent of the cost of new people in Medicaid, I cannot, in good conscience, deny the uninsured access to care," Scott said at a news conference.

Politico Calls TN Governor Haslam "A GOP Star"

Posted on 5:06 PM by Unknown

The Tennessee Governor gets four pages of leg-tingling praise in Politico. Naturally Phil Bredesen piles on the love. And why not? Bredesen and Haslam have so much in common.

Different parties, but the same old heartless cuts to vital life-saving services.

There are no leg-tingling thrills to be found among the dead children victimized by Haslam's miserable Department of Children's Services.

Four pages of praise, two paragraphs of criticism:

Democratic critics contend that Haslam’s confrontation-averse style has allowed a right-wing state Legislature — and state Senate in particular — to run amok in the aftermath of the 2010 tea party wave. However weak the governor’s veto may be, Tennessee House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh said he wished Haslam would do more to fight other Republicans’ “extreme positions.”

“For a governor with such high popularity and such a large majority in the Legislature, he doesn’t pull the trigger too much on his opinions,” said Fitzhugh, a possible Haslam challenger in 2014. “He’s got a much calmer and kinder attitude [than other GOP governors], and I think he genuinely has opinions that are much like mine on many issues. But you know, he’s governor and right now, the governor’s not leading the state. The state Senate’s leading the state.”

Emory University President Praises Three-Fifths Compromise As Noble Honorable

Posted on 7:57 PM by Unknown

Amazing. An amazingly stupid thing to say. Emory University does not need this and neither does Atlanta or this already bad-mouthed region.

Salon:

Atlanta university president calls the deal which counted slaves as three-fifths of a person a classic compromise

In a shockingly horrible column, the president of Emory University held up the “Three-Fifths Compromise” — the deal between Northern and Southern states which counted slaves as three-fifths of a person — as a shining example of political compromise at its best. . .

So under Wagner’s formulation, one of the basest and demeaning political deals of American history, if not the basest, is an example of working toward a “highest aspiration.” Counting slaves as three-fifths of a person becomes an example of American politicians setting their sights high!

Congressman Cohen's Deleted Tweets Were to His Recently Discovered Daughter

Posted on 6:35 AM by Unknown
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN)

Scandal seekers must look elsewhere.

Tennessee's Rep. Steve Cohen has a daughter:

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., tells NBC News that the 24-year-old woman he tweeted at during the State of the Union address was not a romantic interest, but in fact his daughter.  After “The Hill” reported that Cohen -- who is not married -- deleted tweets saying “ilu,” short for “I love you,” to Victoria Brink, Cohen claimed that nothing was inappropriate and that the woman was a daughter of an old family friend. That old family friend turned out to be an old girlfriend of Cohen’s and Victoria Brink's mother.

Cohen claimed the reason for tweeting Brink, who had not admitted publicly to Cohen being her dad, was genuine excitement.

“When she let me know she was watching the State of the Union address I was thrilled that she wanted Steve Cohen to be part of her. I had such joy, that I couldn’t hold back from tweeting her,” said Cohen.

While Judd hasn't announced any decision as to whether she'll run, the possibility has raised considerable interest and apparent consternation among some Republicans. Two earlier surveys, one taken internally by the McConnell campaign, both showed the senator leading Judd by 4 points.

GOP Invites Crazed Ted Nugent to State of Union Speech

Posted on 2:07 PM by Unknown
And the crazy party just keeps on getting crazier.

Hopefully the Secret Service has NRA-wacko Ted Nugent under high surveillance:

Repugnant rocker Ted Nugent declared in an interview at the National Rifle Association convention last April, “[I]f Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

There's still time for the wannabe assassinator to make his move.
Members of Congress do all sorts of things for attention. But Stockman’s invitation to Nugent is reprehensible. At a 2007 concert, Nugent said he told then-Sen. Obama “to suck on my machine gun.” That was after he called him a “piece of —-.” No wonder the Secret Service made it its business to talk to him after what he said at the NRA convention. In addition to his pessimistic premonition then, Nugent also claimed that Obama was a “criminal” who doesn’t “even like the Constitution.”

Justice Ginsburg: The Senate Is Destroying The United States’ Reputation As A Beacon of Democracy

Posted on 3:42 PM by Unknown
Justice Ginsburg gets it right again:

At an event sponsored by the San Diego Association of Business Trial Lawyers on Friday, Ginsburg offered even stronger words of condemnation for our broken senate-confirmation process:
There were only three votes in opposition when she was confirmed to the court by the Senate, but in the past she has said that she doubts if in today’s more partisan political environment if she would be confirmed for the court.

She said Friday that she was hopeful that someday soon the partisan battles over court nominees will fade.

“I’m hoping there will be members of Congress who will say enough. We are destroying the United States’ reputation in the world as a beacon of democracy, and we should go back to the way it was, and the way it should be,” she said of the confirmation process.
