Tennessee Taliban 'Don't Say Gay' Bill Is Back (Video)

Posted on 2:12 AM by Unknown

Tennessee Republican lawmakers continue the tired tradition of making the state a loathsome laughingstock:

Like a homophobic phoenix, the "Don’t Say Gay" bill has risen from the ashes to "protect the youth of Tennessee" — and it includes a provision requiring teachers out gay students to their parents.

Now that we have one party rule with a super-majority, it can only get even more bizarre:

The bill, SB 234, still bars Tennessee teachers from discussing any facet of “non-heterosexual” sexuality with children in grades K-8. But the newest iteration also includes a provision requiring teachers or counselors to inform the parents of some students who identify themselves as LGBT. State Sen. Stacey Campfield (R), who authored the bill the first time around and again introduced it this time, calls out students who might be “at risk,” but leaves the interpretation of that behavior to the teacher:

Family rejection is a serious risk for LGBT youth. Kids who are LGBT often face alienation, if not outright abandonment, because they come out. Forty percent of homeless youth are LGBT, and many of them report that the reason they left home was to escape an environment hostile to their sexual orientation. LGBT youth who experience family rejection are at high risk for depression and suicide.

Much of the credit goes to Stacy Campfield for leading this state into the status of stupider than Mississippi:

Hillary Super PAC Ready to Go

Posted on 1:47 AM by Unknown
Women are holding their breath waiting for Hillary to declare:

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton makes her exit from Foggy Bottom, there’s a super PAC already waiting in the wings to support her in a potential 2016 presidential run.
While the group, “Ready for Hillary,” won’t go live with its website for another two or three weeks, its founders filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday. “We want to be ready to help Hillary when Hillary is ready to run,” explained Allida Black, the group’s chair.
“I marched with Dr. King, but Hillary Clinton really is the leader of my lifetime,” Black said.

Sundance Watch: 'The East' - An Environmental Activist Film (Trailer)

Posted on 3:13 AM by Unknown
This film "has been receiving a lot of buzz at Sundance" and brings to mind something Al Gore said a few years ago:

“If you’re a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience.."

Via Women and Hollywood

"The East, co-written by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij (who directed and previously collaborated with Marling on Sound of My Voice) centers around an ex-FBI agent (Marling) who goes undercover to infiltrate a group who targets major corporations that commit acts against the environment. Ellen Page also stars. The film has been receiving a lot of buzz at Sundance. . . "

Rand Paul managed to get himself and his political ambitions into the Benghaz Hearing. 'Had I been president...', the vain one would have fired her, he said somewhere in his lengthy monologue.

Yeah, if wishes were ponies, Rand Paul would have one. As soon as the hearing ended, the vain and arrogant Rand Paul sent out video clips of his ridiculous monologue, no doubt hoping for some money for 2016.

Rand Paul talked for so long that at one point, Hillary actually reminded him that she was there to, um, answer questions.

Hillary Testifies Before Right-Wing Drama Queens On Benghazi Attack

Posted on 3:43 AM by Unknown
The long awaited day is here. Hillary Rodham Clinton testifies before Congress today -- on the subject of the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Republicans have been wailing and pining for some drama. Expect them to make some. Expect Hillary to crush them like bugs.

The right-wing drama will be televised. Prepare to be entertained:

Republicans on Wednesday will get their last shot at the woman many of them say has the most to answer for with regard to the 9/11 anniversary assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Call it Hillary Clinton’s exit interview. But instead of getting a gold watch for her service as secretary of state, the former first lady will provide testimony under oath before both the House and Senate committees that deal with foreign affairs...

Clinton, who as a senator served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will be squaring off against Marco Rubio, the Republican from Florida who is considered one of the strongest contenders for his party’s presidential nomination in the next election cycle...

Clinton’s toughest grilling, however, is likely to come in the House of Representatives. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican who serves as a subcommittee chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, says he plans to focus on why there appears to be no response to date against the groups who attacked the U.S. facility, killing Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans that evening.

Michelle Obama Eyerolls Boehner (The Gone-Viral Video)

Posted on 3:45 PM by Unknown
Michele Obama's eyeroll at Boehner has gone viral.

But really now, who among us has not rolled her eyes at Boehner and his deranged colleagues?  Scroll down for a more specific reason for the gone-viral eyeroll, according to a  helpful lipreader.

Only INSIDE EDITION can tell you what caused the first lady to roll her eyes heavenward.
So what was said? We asked expert lip reader Larry Wenig. Wenig believes John Boehner is asking President Obama whether he had a chance to have a cigarette before the luncheon.
President Obama gave up cigarettes three years ago. Boehner is a known chain smoker.
Our lip reader, Wenig, caught Boehner saying, “Somebody won’t let you do it”, referring to Michelle, which prompted the first lady’s big eye roll.

Poll: Majority Want Abortion to Remain Legal On 40th Roe Anniversary

Posted on 2:15 PM by Unknown
Most Americans are pro choice, according to a new NBC/WSJ poll. Duh. Duh. Duh!

You know the Wall Street Journal is just sick about paying for this:

A new NBC/WSJ poll finds that, on the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, 70 percent of Americans want the landmark abortion rights ruling to stay. Only 24 percent would like Roe v. Wade to be overturned.
In the same Pew poll, 54 percent think abortion should be always legal or legal most of the time. Another 35 percent think abortion should be illegal but with exceptions; only 9 percent think it should be illegal with no exceptions.

Anti-Choicers Sing 'Happy Birthday Dead Baby’ Outside Abortion Clinic

Posted on 10:56 PM by Unknown
Anti-choicers 'celebrate' the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade by going nuts:

Pro-choice marchers recalled a particularly painful event last month when a woman whose baby had died en utero was coming to the clinic to have it removed.

In an awful coincidence, that was the day, Watters said, when the pro-life demonstrators collected a children’s choir on the sidewalk to sing “Happy Birthday Dead Baby” to anyone driving in.

“Will had to physically restrain the father,” Watters said, nodding to one of the men marching in a pro-choice jacket. “And by the time she walked through them, she was an emotional wreck.”

Stephen Colbert’s Sister To Run for Congress. No Joke!

Posted on 10:47 PM by Unknown
Wow. It looks like shaking things up runs in the Colbert family. This is going to be quite a race:

Stephen Colbert may have “run for president,” but his sister is actually going to run for Congress.
Elizabeth Colbert-Busch’s soon-to-be-official campaign has informed South Carolina Democratic Party executive director Amanda Loveday that it will file Tuesday for the special election for appointed Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) old House seat, Loveday has told the Washington Post.

But looking into her sparkling brown eyes, you’d never know this woman has seen enough tragedy for two lifetimes. Her infectious laugh fills the room as she talks about her children. Her face lights up every time she mentions Claus, her second husband and the man she calls the love of her life. And when she talks about her job, she speaks with a passion so great, you’d swear her boss was sitting next to her.

Colbert-Busch will very likely be an underdog against basically any Republican she would face for the seat. Scott’s district went just 40 percent for President Obama this year.

Republicans Cave on Debt Celing Drama. Obama Learns How to Say NO.

Posted on 10:33 PM by Unknown

At last, Obama has drawn a line in the sand and Republicans have crawled away from it.  Obama won! Let's hope this becomes a Presidential habit. Oh, Republicans are trying to save face by whining that their surrender is only for 3 months. No believes them. To quote the inestimable Rachel Maddow: "It's over."

New York Magazine:
It’s over. House Republicans, following a literal and metaphorical retreat, have announced they plan to lift the debt ceiling without extracting policy concessions. Whatever mini-dramas may follow, the GOP leadership has both recognized the need to abandon their strategy of using the debt ceiling as a hostage and also to recognize this publicly...
The main credit here goes to the Obama administration for recognizing that enmeshing the debt ceiling with policy negotiations was a horrible idea that it had to stop dead in its tracks. To let debt ceiling hikes become contingent on fiscal policy agreements was to set up endless future crises that would eventually trigger default when one party or another held out for a little too much.
The whole key to making Obama’s extortion-squelching plan, and saving American government from endless cycles of hostage drama that would eventually end in a default, was to credibly insist that he would not trade anything for a debt ceiling hike. After he moved his red line on tax cuts, I doubted that Obama could really make this stick. But he has.
Now, Republicans are only voting on a three-month extension. But this is a face-saving gesture, too. Once they’ve recognized that the debt ceiling isn’t leverage, they have no reason to keep taking painful votes that expose their members to attack ads. Letting Republicans weaponize the debt ceiling in the first place in 2011 was one of the crucial errors of Obama’s presidency. He appears to have corrected it.

Republican Party Approval Rating at 26% (And Falling!)

Posted on 9:29 AM by Unknown
Yep. The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds that a paltry 26% of Americans have a positive view of the Republican Party. That would be the party that controls the U.S. House of Representatives only because it went to scandalously unethical lengths in gerrymandering.

Since there is no chance the king of dysfunctional political parties is going to reform itself anytime in the near future, it seems safe to assume that GOP popularity will continue to plummet:

According to the poll, 49% hold a negative view of the Republican Party -- its highest negative rating in the survey since 2008. (In fact, it’s been higher than 49% just once in the entire history of the NBC/WSJ poll.) Only 26% have a positive view of the GOP.

By comparison, the Democratic Party has a net positive rating, with 44% holding a favorable view of the party and 38% holding an unfavorable one. And the conservative Tea Party movement, which took off in Obama’s first year as president, also finds its popularity at an all-time low in the poll, with an upside-down fav/unfav of 23%/47%. What’s more, just 14 percent of adults approve of Congress’ job (which is near the all-time low in the poll), while 81 percent disapprove (which is close to its all-time high). By the way, most of the recent negative movement for the GOP is among core Republicans. The GOP was already viewed very negatively by Democrats and indies; it couldn’t really get much worse with those two groups. So this latest shift for the GOP is due to the fact that a growing number of core Republicans were not happy with how the party handled the fiscal cliff.

Dennis Kucinich Goes to Work for the Dark Side

Posted on 3:45 PM by Unknown
This is just sad.

Fox News has signed former Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich as a regular contributor, the network announced on Wednesday.

The former Ohio congressman, who ran for president unsuccessfully in 2004 & 2008, will make his debut as a paid Fox News contributor on Thursday’s “The O’Reilly Factor.” Kucinich has signed a multi-year deal with the network and will make appearances on both Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, according to a press release.

Kucinich was considered one of the House's most liberal members while he was in office. During his stint in Congress, Kucinich sued President Barack Obama in federal court over whether the president illegally circumvented Congress when he approved U.S. military action in Libya, attempted to impeach both Pres. George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney and received an “F” grade from the NRA for his pro-gun control voting record. He is also well-known for his envirnomental platform and his vegan diet.

New York Passes Strictest Gun Control in Nation (Video)

Posted on 2:56 AM by Unknown
Why oh why can't New York pols be in charge of the whole country?

ALBANY — New York on Tuesday took the lead in the national fight against gun violence when Gov. Cuomo signed into law a sweeping package of gun-control measures — including a major expansion of the state’s assault weapons ban.
The governor signed the bill just before dinner time, minutes after the Assembly sent it to his desk on a 104-43 vote. He called it “the most comprehensive package in the nation.”

“I am proud to be a New Yorker because New York is doing something,” Cuomo said. “We are fighting back.”

The measure sailed through on a fast track, negotiated in the weeks after the Dec. 14 Newtown, Conn., shooting rampage. It was pushed by Cuomo, who wanted New York to be the first state to tighten its gun laws after the tragedy. The law took effect immediately — before President Obama could announce his own sweeping proposal for action on the federal level to curb gun violence. Obama was set to detail his plan on Wednesday.
The new state law expands the definition of banned weapons to include semiautomatic pistols and rifles with at least one military-style feature. As a result, the Bushmaster AR-15 used in the shooting that killed 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown would be banned.

Republicans Leaders Shrieking Insane Threats of Impeachment Over Guns

Posted on 4:33 PM by Unknown
If only Obama were half as bold, half as liberal as the hysteria-driven Republicans fear.

Alas, Obama is not bold, nor liberal, but that doesn't stop lunatic Republican leaders from shrieking insane threats of impeachment:

Former Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese, now a prominent emeritus official at the Heritage Foundation, became the latest conservative to warn that President Obama could risk impeachment if he takes executive action on reducing gun violence in an interview Monday night.

Speaking with Newsmax, Meese said Congress may have to consider impeaching Obama if he were “to try to override the Second Amendment in any way” with an executive order. He did allow that there are some executive actions related to guns that Obama could take wouldn’t be impeachable.

Congressman Yarmuth (D-KY): Ashley Judd May Run

Posted on 3:25 PM by Unknown
Here's yet another indication that Ashley Judd is serious about running for office. Which office is not specified. Still hoping she decides to run in Tennessee. That is, if she can persuade the Tennessee Democratic Party to get up off the couch. Kentucky is all but begging her to go home and run against Mitch McConnell:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Will she or won't she? That's the question many are asking about Ashley Judd possibly running against Kentucky U-S Senator Mitch McConnell. Congressman John Yarmuth says he's talked with Judd, who is from Kentucky. He says the actress is weighing the possibility of running for office.,,

Yarmuth says, "I think she's very interested in becoming a candidate for some office whether it's next year against Mitch McConnell or it's against Rand Paul whether it's for some other office I don't know, but she's a very serious potential candidate."

FP: 'No Girls Allowed: Why the Obama Administration Needs Hormone Therapy'

Posted on 10:44 PM by Unknown
Rosa Brooks of FP magazine expresses dismay over President Obama's national security and foreign policy team of white men and offers a way for Obama to save a little face:
Oh, boy.Or maybe I should say: Oh, boys! Because here we go again! As a female columnist at Foreign Policy, it is apparently my solemn duty to point out that President Obama has populated the top ranks of the national security and foreign-policy establishment exclusively with fellas. Where are those bindersfull of women when you need them?
In his cabinet choices so far, President Obama has even managed to take a step backward from his first term, replacing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the sole woman allowed into the clubhouse, with Senator John Kerry. Obama let Susan Rice, a smart, tough, accomplished woman and an obvious choice to replace Clinton, be driven out by rock-throwing little boys from the Hill. Then, for defense secretary, he inexplicably selected former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel over Michèle Flournoy, the universally respected former undersecretary of defense for policy (and a Democrat to boot, not that I'm counting or anything).

So here's what Obama's second-term national security and foreign-policy team looks like, so far: Secretary of defense? White guy. Secretary of state? White guy. CIA director? White guy. Director of national intelligence? White guy. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? White guy. White House chief of staff? White guy. National security advisor? White guy.

So here's a thought: It's not too late to increase the gender diversity on your national security team. [Mr. President], How about appointing Susan Rice or Michèle Flournoy to replace Tom Donilon as national security advisor?

Mother Jones: The Massive New Liberal Plan to Remake American Politics

Posted on 10:43 PM by Unknown
Another must-read piece from Mother Jones:
It was the kind of meeting that conspiratorial conservative bloggers dream about.
A month after President Barack Obama won reelection, top brass from three dozen of the most powerful groups in liberal politics met at the headquarters of the National Education Association (NEA), a few blocks north of the White House. Brought together by the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Communication Workers of America (CWA), and the NAACP, the meeting was invite-only and off-the-record. Despite all the Democratic wins in November, a sense of outrage filled the room as labor officials, environmentalists, civil rights activists, immigration reformers, and a panoply of other progressive leaders discussed the challenges facing the left and what to do to beat back the deep-pocketed conservative movement.

New York Times: Nashville Is the New 'It' City

Posted on 2:34 PM by Unknown
The New York Times says Nashville is cool.

Believe it!  (Especially East Nashville):

NASHVILLE — Portland knows the feeling. Austin had it once, too. So did Dallas. Even Las Vegas enjoyed a brief moment as the nation’s “it” city.

 Now, it’s Nashville’s turn...

Mayor Karl Dean, a Democrat in his second term, is the head cheerleader.“It’s good to be Nashville right now,” he said during a recent tour of his favorite civic sites, the biggest of which is a publicly financed gamble: a new $623 million downtown convention center complex that is the one of the most expensive public projects in Tennessee history...

Flush with young new residents and alive with immigrants, tourists and music, the city made its way to the top of all kinds of lists in 2012.

A Gallup poll ranked it in the top five regions for job growth. A national entrepreneurs’ group called it one of the best places to begin a technology start-up. Critics admire its growing food scene. GQ magazine declared it simply “Nowville.”

Gabby Giffords Launches Gun Control PAC

Posted on 9:52 AM by Unknown
Gabby Giffords and husband Mark Kelley are tired of waiting for the perpetual Do Nothing Congress to address the perpetual and horrific problem of gun violence in America.

The couple write in USA Today:

In response to a horrific series of shootings that has sown terror in our communities, victimized tens of thousands of Americans, and left one of its own bleeding and near death in a Tucson parking lot, Congress has done something quite extraordinary — nothing at all.

I was shot in the head while meeting with constituents two years ago today. Since then, my extensive rehabilitation has brought excitement and gratitude to our family. But time and time again, our joy has been diminished by new, all too familiar images of death on television: the breaking news alert, stunned witnesses blinking away tears over unspeakable carnage, another community in mourning. America has seen an astounding 11 mass shootings since a madman used a semiautomatic pistol with an extended ammunition clip to shoot me and kill six others. Gun violence kills more than 30,000 Americans annually...

Americans for Responsible Solutions, which we are launching today, will invite people from around the country to join a national conversation about gun violence prevention, will raise the funds necessary to balance the influence of the gun lobby, and will line up squarely behind leaders who will stand up for what's right.
